One of my former students, Alice, who was my assistant at Shantou University, recently got married. She had planned to wed in 2011, but after consulting with a fortune-teller (as most would-be married couples do in China), she was told that it would far more propitious to tie the knot at the end of 2010. Like almost all the young, educated Chinese I've met, she admits that she doesn't really believe in fortune-telling, but like most of her peers, she reasons, why risk ignoring the advice?
